Do you actually need to eat pizza to be called an urban citizen?

Today, while travelling I saw a new shop that was selling Dabeli(an Indian snack). That got me thinking about does that shop needs to be there? Does the world need more Dabeli? Maybe that area. But who cares! Those who need it will get it. And the business will thrive. More oil will be purchased, more white flour will be consumed, more fats, more gym memberships, more machines, more iron and eventually more money. That looks like a pretty good cycle. But do we need to have everything that they sell?      This point has already been made by a lot of people and in a lot of ways. I saw this point about 'consumer culture' for the first time in an essay called Upabhoktavaad ki Sanskruti by Shyaamcharan Dubey in our Hindi textbook Standard 9. Then it came again in several ways for instance in Fight Club (1999) movie. So it has now become the need to be in the trend. One needs to eat pizza to be an urban citizen, and one needs to have a car to show success even though a mo...

Death of detachment

I closed my eyes and felt the whole world gone. It was my presence until the sounds of people walking without lifting their feet echoed. Those unsung sounds of birds, people, kids, and utensils, made me feel that I belonged to this world. My instincts tried to convince me otherwise. I went to the seashore, dwelled in my quiet room, plugged in earplugs and yet I kept belonging to this world. These are all omens or proofs of my belongingness.  There’s a beautiful helplessness in belonging that once you do, you can’t cease belonging to the world, even when you don’t want to; even when there is no meaning to it.

A Night In the Forest

The night woke up when the sun set, Birds in the herds broke up to their nests, Moon apologized for not coming that night, And as usual he blamed the clouds for that.   The night there was no night but just dark, There was greenery, color, visible nothing but dark, The night opened the gates and rain flooded my body, I saw myself in the mirror of shower which looked just dark.   Night blessed the valley with thunders and there was light, I embraced the beauty for a second and again there was night, Guilt mocked me as I took the beauty of the place for granted, I lay on the slipping mud faced the shower fighting my mind.   It seemed as if centuries had passed had passed and my soul held me from within, I was ready to surrender as if nature questioned my very being, Showers stopped and billion lives near me started breathing, I forgot what I was doing there but I was healing.

Reality

It is just the Sun when we see a day, It's deep dark otherwise outside. There are no paths but just the distances, Traversing which the light too gets tired. They want to conquer territories on land, Unaware of the great relams existing ahead, Relams of the four dimensional reality, Reality that can't be perceived by their intellect. Misconception exists of them being the only one, In a scale of distance beyond their perception, Just like a tiny drop of water, In a huge army of big and black clouds. The universe which is filled with celestial and mysteries, Of which even the Time is a mere hand, Untouched by the reach of their vision, With unimaginable biospheres beyond their waters and sand. Yes it is all novel and dark in the cosmos, But the stars and fire standing still glorifies that, A novelty that they would never get to know, The knowledge that is impossible to even imagine. Imagination is the key to the knowledge, That key could be...

I AM TIME

I am a traveller, I keep on travelling, And the world travels with me, From the infinity till my daring. Creatures respect me and so do I, I never get tired, My journeys and goals are far from them, And I have never been in the human herd. I have seen dinosaurs, And I have seen all His creation History has been my subtle part, And I have seen incarnation. I have seen men getting civilized, I have seen civilizations getting destroyed, Seen I have the works of Shakespeare, But seeing that all I never got annoyed. I have seen battles and revolutions, I have seen the creations of history, And many things that today I know, For them is still a mystery. Seen I have the fall of kingdoms, Seen I have the rise of colonies, I have also shaken hands with democracy, And there are many memories in my inventories. I have cried over the deaths in disasters, Which they call 'World War', I have seen them using horse, And now they do travel with the car. I have seen ...

A BIRD

A bird so desperate to fly Sitting in the nest and adoring the sky Seeing the distant view of woods and building Unaware of his destiny's conspiracy who wants his yielding Under the cool shade of tree The bright sight he views and sees Unaware about the heat of the sun For a sky to conquer he thinks he is the only one With passing time the day comes and he takes off Flying here and there just for a bread loaf Wind blows to make him change direction But he thinks he is controlling his action He realises that every factor is using him But still in his eyes there is a raging fire of dreams He imagine himself flying above clouds in sky And sees the glimpse of success by closing his eyes He alone flies by all the odds facing Sees others in group and omens tracing Nothing but defeat in his toes he catches But realization of learning he has from all the matches The sky gets dark and it rains Able to do nothing and in water he drains The chirp of his grief gets loud...
